About 50 persons killed in traffic accidents

About 50 persons were killed and 234 more were wounded during Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday, the security Media Centre reported.
Statistics of the Interior Ministry cited that 146 accidents occurred across the governorate of Yemen, singling out that traffic accidents costs amounted YR 52 million.
Official statistics had said that traffic accidents killed about 1045 persons and wounded about 5197 including 3,000 persons seriously wounded during the first half of 2012.
According to statistics posted by the Interior Ministry, 3597 traffic ancients occurred in the period from January to June across various Yemeni governorates.
Material loses caused by the accidents amounted YR1 billion in this period, the statistics said.
The statistics attributed the causes of traffic accidents to high-speeding, carelessness of drivers and pedestrians, the lack usage of cars seat belts during driving, chewing Qat, using cell-phones while driving, rains and other reasons.
Official statistics had revealed that Yemen has witnessed 125,773 traffic accidents in different governorates the period of the beginning of 2000 to the end of 2009.
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry said that about 632 civilians were killed and injured in gun accidents in the first half of 2012, affirming that the death cases amounted 102.
The weapons used in the accidents included machine guns, firearms and grenades, they added.
The Interior Ministry has recently launched a anti-weapon campaign in which it focused on combating gun spread and carrying in main cities.
