The Carter Center announced in a statement posted on its website that former Yemeni Prime Minister Abdelkarim al-Iriyani and former Jordanian Premier Marwan Muasher will lead its mission tasked with overseeing the runoff Egyptian presidential elections to take place on Saturday and Sunday.

The delegation led by al-Iriyani and Muasher will also include Jason Carter, state senator of Georgia, and David Carroll, director of the Carter Center's Democracy Program, the statement said.

The Center will deploy 90 witnesses from 36 countries to follow polling, counting, and those parts of the tabulation processes to which the Center has access, according to the statement.

The Center released last month a preliminary statement on the first round of the Egyptian presidential elections saying that that while the polling process was largely peaceful and orderly, it occurred in a broader political context beset by uncertainty.

So far, the turnout to the polls throughout Egypt was perceived as low with only 43% of the eligible voters participated in the polls. The preliminary results showed that the Muslim Brotherhood Candidate Mohamed Mursi stood first, followed by the former Premier Ahmed Shafiq who ranked second.

The Carter Center's election mission is conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation and Code of Conduct that was commemorated at the United Nations in 2005 and has been endorsed by 40 election observation groups.

The Center assesses the electoral process based on Egypt's national legal framework and its obligations for democratic elections contained in regional and international agreements.
