Yemen’s clerics and sheikhs called on President Saleh to respond positively to the people demanding his departure, saying in a statement on Saturday Saleh should stand down to spare bloodshed and close the door of sedition.
At their meeting in the house of Sadiq Al-Ahmer, the sheikh of Yemen’s sheikhs, they held the president fully responsible for the violence that resulted in the deaths of dozens on Friday when the security forces and pro-Saleh thugs attacked the protesters in the square of change outside Sana’a University.
Furthermore, they warned of repeating the bloodshed, saying the blood of those killed and the hundreds injured will not go in vain.
At the meeting chaired by Al-Ahmer, the clerics and sheikhs distanced themselves from those who participated in the attacks against the unarmed protesters in the capital and other cities, warning of the continuous deadly crackdown on the people demanding the ouster of the regime.
In their statement, they also dismissed the state of emergency declared on Friday by President Saleh following the deaths and injuries, justifying this due to the lack of a law regulating the emergency state and because of the unilateral moves by some people in the country to okay oppression of rights and freedoms preserved by the constitution and to inflame the sedition among the Yemeni people.
The general prosecution should assume its responsibility and investigate the killing on Friday to bring those involved to justice, they urged.
Warning of using the judicial authorities to cover the crimes and targeting the protesters, they called on the armed forces and the security forces to disobey the orders of the national security system which usually aim to attack the anti-government protesters.
Moreover, they urged to dissolve the national security system because of its illegal acts and to bring its commanders and other security leaders responsible for illegal actions against the anti-Saleh protesters to justice over their unconstitutional actions.
The official media should stop misleading the public opinion and distorting the facts and they should serve the people not the corrupt and oppressive regime, they said, saluting the youths and other people conducting protests and sit-ins in the capital Sana’a and other cities.
