President Ali Abdullah Saleh announced today that he would not seek to extend his presidential term after 2013. He vowed not to inherit rule in Yemen to his son, Ahmed Ali Saleh, as well as to postponing the parliamentary elections, which were expected to take place this April.
President Saleh said, "I make this compromise today for the sake of the country, Yemen's interest come before personal interests."
The announcement comes in parliament in which opposition members boycotted to protest against the governing strategies of Saleh’s ruling party.
The opposition coalition, Joint Meeting Parties (JMP), said the president’s speech was not enough and called on all its followers to participate in the countrywide protest expected to gather over one million protesters nationwide tomorrow.
Thousands of security forces were deployed to the streets of the capital today to ensure complete safety during President Saleh’s speech.
