The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and the UN signed on Sunday the United Nations Development Assistance Framework 2012-2015 for Yemen estimated at $ 395.581000.
The UN agencies in the country will contribute 95.7 per cent out of the sum and the rest will be provided by other UN agencies. The aid is almost 32 per cent up from the UN aid to the country for 2007-2011.
The aid document was signed with Premier Ali Mujawar and Administrator of the
UNDP Helen Clark, currently visiting Yemen, in attendance.
The new framework demonstrates the collective response of the UN agencies to development priorities in Yemen where 2015 was set as the final year of the fourth development plan for poverty reduction and assessing achievement of the millennium development goals.
The sum will be released over four years instead of five years in a move which aims to support the government's efforts to foster progress towards the MDGs.
The new United Nations Development Assistance Framework of Yemen was the result of deliberations between the UN country team and the government, civil society and non-governmental organizations, UN and government officials said.
It focuses on four axes: comprehensive economic growth based on economic diversification, providing sustainable basic services based on equity, empowering the women and the youth, promoting good governance and social cohesion, they made clear.
Apart from the new aid framework, the UNDP Administrator Mrs Clark signed two documents for cooperation with the government on two development projects.
The UNDP in the country said in a press release the first project aims to promote the
social cohesion in four years with $ 8.6 million through programmes
that aim to reinforce the culture of social cohesion among all society classes, prevent
conflicts and establish the best ways to develop the local communities.
Economically, the projects aims to train and enable local communities to assess their needs, identify their priorities and make decisions on their required projects, $ 10000 for each village.
This project will also focus on woman and youth initiatives, supporting non-governmental organizations and establishing projects run by local communities.
The second project aims to support local communities in Saada with a budget of $ 4.2 million.
The three-year project has other objectives including contribution to the government plans to realize stability, and helping the internally displaced persons, the disabled, the youth and the women in Saada to identify their priorities and design, implement and supervise their projects.
