President Saleh does his best to stop Al-Qaeda and root out terrorists inside his country and there was clear evidence for this when he ordered brave soldiers to protect the Yemeni people from Al-Qaeda members, a senior U.S. official said on Wednesday.
John Brennan, the assistant to the U.S. President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, said in an interview with Aljazeera Satellite Channel that the U.S. provides funds and technical assistance including training national counterterrorism forces and equipment to help Yemen face all challenges topped by economic woes and Al-Qaeda threat.
The U.S. is working closely and cooperatively with Yemen and its partners to eliminate terrorism everywhere it exists on the planet, and the U.S. supports Yemen with every necessary thing to uproot Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula AQAP, which has been responsible for almost all terrorist plots against the U.S., he said.
The U.S. assistance to Yemen, however, should be bound up with the respect of justice and human rights, he said, adding: "I am confident President Saleh does his best and cooperates with us, and his government sticks to the law when fighting terrorism."
"I have talked to him many times and found out all measures taken by Yemeni officials were in accordance with the law and in the best interest of the Yemeni people."
He went on saying:
The U.S. doest not plan to open new warfronts because many Americans have been killed while trying to protect others such as in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But our country is committed to assisting others to live in peace and security and protect them from terrorist slaughters.
Yemen was a victim of the cancer of Al-Qaeda, hence, we are doing all we can to ensure that we help this country deal with security and economic problems.
We can't allow Al-Qaeda to spread in Yemen because it is undermining the country's economy and basic systems which receive our support.
The Yemeni people are good and I am confident they don't want Al-Qaeda to live in their country, however, they want to bring up their children well and help them go to school.
After the explosive parcels sent by AQAP to the U.S. that were intercepted before they could reach their destinations in Chicago, U.S. President Obama assured his Yemeni counterpart that the U.S. administration stands by the Yemeni government and people as well as all Middle East countries to thwart terrorist attacks and eliminate all extremists, he said.
