Chapala hurricane arrived on Sunday in Yemen's Socotra archipelago with strong winds, high waves and heavy rains hitting the northern islands.
Several people were injured as the rescue teams were helping those living at the coast to take shelter, local officials said.
People were evacuated to safe schools and highlands after their houses were submerged with waters, the officials said, adding that efforts to face the impacts of the cyclone are still not enough.
The rare tropical storm is heading toward the eastern province of Hadramout, they said.
On Saturday, President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi ordered formation of an operations room to face the hurricane which the world meteorological organizations said was with a speed of 140 mph.
The organization warned it would be destructive while urging countries to be hit primarily Yemen and Oman to take necessary measures.
