Around 10 civilians were killed and 20 others injured after Houthi militants shelled populated areas in Yemen's southern city of Taiz, local medical sources said on Sunday. The death toll is expected to increase as some were badly injured, they said.
Local sources said the Houthis and forces loyal to the former president shelled the Ekhwah, Althawra, Alshamasi and Alshaab districts.
Medics could not get into some districts due shelling, they said, while pointing out that the shelling was the heaviest since violence broke out in the city weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the Yemeni government which is staying in the Saudi capital Riyadh appealed to the international community to intervene in order to stop mass killing and destruction in Taiz, agencies reported.
The violence in Taiz coincided with continued Saudi-led airstrikes on the Houthi militants, camps and weapon depots in several cities including the capital Sanaa.
Moreover, agencies reported that the Saudi forces clashed with Houthi militants on the border between the two counties after the Houthis shelled Saudi towns killing around 7 civilians.
