UAE Foreign Ministry lauded Yemen efforts in safeguarding its diplomats on Wednesday after Interior Ministry spokesman Major-General Mohammed al-Qaidy announced that the authorities had successfully intercepted and arrested six members of a terror cell believe to be responsible for running targeted attack and kidnapping hit against foreign diplomats in the Yemeni capital.
Al-Qaidy explained that the six-member terror cell team was arrested last month as part of the Interior Ministry security crackdown in the capital. According to his statement a stash of weapons, fake passports and fake Yemeni currency were found at their safe-house. The men allegedly planned to kidnap next United Arab Emirates' charge d'affaires, Khalid al-Hawsani.
"The gang members confessed that they were going to receive a reward of 5 million riyals ($1.33 million) and a four-wheel drive car if they managed to kidnap the UAE's charge d'affaires," al-Qaidy told reporters at a news conference this Wednesday.
Al-Qaidy added that the authorities had also managed to arrest three dissidents responsible for threatening Saudi Arabia Embassy in Sana’a.
The poorest nation in the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen has had to face an ever-worsening situation over the past months, with a string of kidnappings against foreign diplomats as well as targeted attack against westerners and Yemen officials.
Determined to address the situation and reclaim control over the state, President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi vowed in an address this Tuesday to deal with dissidents and trouble makers with an iron fist. But if President Hadi has often promised to remedy Yemen’ security shortfalls, this time actions on the ground have echoed the presidential statement.
