Amid confirmation from Yemen Defence Ministry that another military operation in the south is underway against al-Qaeda positions, CNN reported that following a DNA test conducted by Saudi officials on the remnants of a Saudi national first identified as being Ibrahim al-Asiri, turned out to be negative.
A week after Yemen announced victorious it had taken down both Nasser al-Wuhayshi and Ibrahim al-Asiri, it appears more likely neither were eliminated, raising some questions as to the validity of the intelligence officials acted upon to direct their strike.
Regardless, President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi is not letting out the pressure on al-Qaeda, determined to crush Islamic radicalism and out-root all sympathisers to the movement out of Yemen.
"The army troops, with military helicopter gunships and tanks, started attacking Al Qaeda hideouts with a large offensive in Abyan's mountainous region of Mahfad and the town of Azzan in neighbouring Shabwa province," an official was quoted by Xinhua as saying earlier today.
The official noted that the operation ran under the code name, “Operation Golden Swords”.
In the biggest ground operation ever staged against al-Qaeda in Yemen southern territories over 1600 soldiers have mobilized across Abyan and Shabwa, putting both provinces under complete military lockdown.
Al-Qaeda Yemen which has already been dubbed as the most dangerous Islamic terror branch in the Arabian Peninsula and to some extent the broader region, has seen its outposts, training camps and militants systematically targeted since April 20, when Yemen kicked off a decisive military operation against the group. However, despite such display of force, results on the ground have been difficult to gauge due to officials lack of transparency.
