Security officials in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a confirmed late on Monday that a German diplomatic attaché had suffered injuries following a botched kidnapping attempt near the German Embassy in Hadda (southern district).
While Hadda, also called the diplomatic district has always been considered relatively safe, as home to most of Sana’a upper class and a heavy police presence in the streets, recent attacks against foreign diplomats have pretty much shatter this sense of security.
According to witnesses’ accounts, unidentified gunmen driving an unlicensed four-wheel drive vehicle attempted to roadblock a diplomat as he travelled near the German Embassy in what appeared to be an attempted kidnapping.
"One of the diplomats was injured when gunmen opened fire at his car in an apparent kidnapping attempt," Reuters quoted an embassy source as saying.
In another account, a witness recalled seeing the German attaché speeding away from his attackers as they attempted to block his progress, showering his car with bullets in order to bring him to a stop.
An unidentified source was also quotes by Reuters as saying the diplomat was shot in the leg.
With officials still refusing to comment further on the attack was obvious security reason, details remain very sketchy.
Security sources have been keen to play down any al-Qaeda connection, blaming instead political factions. Officials at the presidential palace are under the impression that certain factions would be attempting to undermine President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi’s authority and reforms by generating unrest and insecurity at the heart of the capital.
That being said, the authorities are leaving no stone unturned.
