Only a couple of days after Yemen witnessed the largest air and ground military strikes against al-Qaeda operatives across several of the country central and southern provinces, officials have confirmed that two Saudi women attempted to illegally enter Yemen with their six children in order to join up al-Qaeda and become active members of the terror group.
While Yemen intelligence services have long established that al-Qaeda Yemen has managed since 2011 to recruit foreign fighters, having through its network of alliances attracted many outside agents to its cause, the idea that AQAP could still in the midst of a fierce crackdown call out for support is rather unnerving.
Gripped by much insecurity and political instability Yemen has become since the Arab Spring movement (2011) a haven for radical Islamists and somewhat of a magnet for those sold in the idea of global Jihad against western powers.
It is actually to break such cycle that President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi authorized April 20-21 attack against al-Qaeda, having understood that the fight had to be taken to the beating heart of the terror movement.
As per reported by al-Arabiya earlier on Wednesday, police arrested two Saudi women and their children alongside two Yemeni smugglers as they tried to cross illegally from Jazan (south-western province of Saudi Arabia).
Speaking on al-Qaeda’s recruiting technique, a Saudi journalist, identified as Mohammad al-Zayyad told Al Arabiya Wednesday that AQAP has often reached out to Saudi women, keen to recruit them. “Over the last couple of years, al-Qaeda has tried to exploit women, whether in the countries that it targets, like Saudi Arabia, and take advantage of women and children, and also blackmail states in order to put pressure on them, or for money to fund the organization,” he said.
He added, “ “[They might] also use the women for logistical reasons, since the countries they enter, like Yemen or Syria, where they join groups such as the Nusra Front or the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria.”
