For the second time in less than a week Saudi border guards were targeted by unidentified armed men as they patrolled near the Yemeni border.
Saudi media reported on Monday morning the death of one officer, stressing a patrol came under heavy fire at about 3am in the “mountainous Saudi eastern part of Jizan, which lies directly north of Yemen.
Jazan Today, a Saudi online media outlet, noted that officials were looking at the attack as an isolated act of violence committed by a gang of smugglers, rather than the premeditated work of disgruntled Yemeni tribesmen.
Although Saudi officials have rather tight-lipped over the incident for security reasons, sources confirmed that one Saudi border guard, Alkhbrani Mohammed, had died as a result of the shoot-out, adding that another, Alaziqi Mohammed, has been injured. The man is believed to be receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Even though Saudi Arabia is looking into the attack strictly from a security point of view, having understood the attack on its border guards as proof that Yemen northern border with Saudi Arabia had become a smuggling hive, security experts have warned a political link should not so easily be dismissed.
As per noted by local media the Houthi-connection (a Shiite group organized under the leadership of Abdel-Malek al-Houthi) have often voiced their hostility toward Saudi Arabia and expressed a willingness to regain control of what they perceived as Yemen’ stolen lands: the provinces of Asir, Najran and Jizan, where incidently both attacks took place.
