According to reports, one of Yemen’s architectural and religious treasures, Muaz bin Jabal’s Mosque, the first Islamic building to have been constructed in Yemen at a time when Islam was only a murmur in the region, is under treat of collapse.
A companion of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) Muaz bin Jabil was tasked with bringing the message of Islam to Yemen. It is under his relentless dedication to the Scriptures that Yemenis came to embrace Islam in their hundreds, turning the faith a handful few into an empire of the faithful.
Al Jund mosque, which stands in the southern city of Taiz, (Yemen ‘second most populous city and self-proclaimed cultural capital) requires urgent care as its foundations are to be no longer sound.
A mosque employee, Al-Izzi Muslih already told reporters he reached out to Italian engineers, hoping they would help restore the Mosque to its former glory and ensure that one of Yemen’s most invaluable treasures is not lost to decay and disrepair.
The mosque contains manuscripts and texts handwritten by Muaz bin Jabal, and thus represents a fantastic source of knowledge for not only scholars but whoever values history.
Building inspector, Taha Ulwan was quoted by Anadolu agency was quoted as saying that, “Serious cracks have appeared in the walls and the roof and the minaret has tilted to one side.”
The mosque was built in the sixth year after hijrah, when early Muslims were forced to flee Mecca due to religious repression to Medina.
