Yemeni officials confirmed on Thursday that due to unrest and violence in the southern territories the coalition government had decided to postpone the arrival of UN humanitarian mission.
Following reports of clashes and heavy civilian casualties in the southern province of al-Dhale where southern secessionists have violently opposed the security forces. While southern secessionist have made no apologies toward their systematic rejection of government policies, especially in regards to former South Yemen, tensions reached an all-time high late last December after the military allegedly deliberately targeted a funeral tent as to eliminate a southern dissident. While the defense ministry has always maintained the move had been unintentional, Haraki militants (southern secessionists) have begged to differ.
After calls from Navy Pillay, the UN high Commissioner for Human Rights, on both the UN and the Yemeni government to curb human rights violations and protect at all cost civilian population, the UN announced it would sent a humanitarian fact-finding mission to Yemen to further investigate southerners recriminations and address local officials’ humanitarian concerns.
The decision to postpone al-Dhale visit was taken after gunmen suspected to be affiliated to al-Qaeda targeted in the capital, Sana’a, a high ranking intelligence military officer.
With Yemen’ security fast slipping away from the government’s grasp, the impoverished nation has been turned into a hotbed for dissidence.
The 10-strong UN delegation will be remain in Aden as officials continue to monitor the situation.
George Abu Zuluf, representing the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.noted on Thursday to reporters, "We received a call from a member of the governmental committee informing us that the security situation there now does not allow us to enter.”
He added, “The UN delegation urges Sana’a to quickly secure access to the province... as any delay would affect civilians.”
