As more news is coming through of another terror-run attacked against Yemen’s economic interests, security experts and the international community are increasingly concerned over Yemen’s coalition government ability to stem off Islamic militants and prevent a return to power.
A day after Colonel Mohammed Abdullah al-Habashy was assassinated in Sayoun (south-eastern province of Hadhramawt) in a drive-by shooting, security sources reported on Sunday that five soldiers sustained serious injuries when militants attempted to attack an oil tanker in Hadhramawt.
The soldiers were taken to Ibn Sina hospital to be treated for their injuries.
Local officials could not at this point identify the attackers, only warning that in the light of recent events any group: from al-Qaeda to southern secessionist or even tribesmen could be to blame.
Al-Qaeda has since this summer dramatically upped the intensity and frequency of its attacks, putting Yemen in a constant state of fear and tension.
Back in 2011, at the height of the Arab Spring al-Qaeda militants used the power vacuum which the popular uprising created to seize large swathes of land in the restive southern province of Abyan. Both the cities of Jaar and Zinjibar were declared Islamic Caliphate under al-Qaeda’s rule, an event which profoundly shocked Yemenis as for the first time, the reality of Islamic extremism became a ground reality.
President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi had to enrol the help of local tribes and dispatch several military battalions to dislodge al-Qaeda militants and reclaim ownership over its territories in 2012.
While Yemen sought to have crushed al-Qaeda’s territorial ambition by chasing out all Islamic operatives from Abyan it soon realized that if the terrorists had indeed returned into hiding, their ability to do harm had been but diminished for a while. Ever since 2012 al-Qaeda has run a relentless guerrilla-type warfare against Yemen’s institutions, slowly eroding its power by systematically targeting its military and intelligence officers.
