A local charitable organization organized a mass wedding this Thursday in the capital, Sana'a, helping hundreds of young men and women to tie the knot completely free of charge.
Often a heavy financial burden on the groom, young Yemeni men have said they found the idea of marriage daunted , fearful their meager resources will not suffice to cover their expenses.
With Yemen still battling recession and poor economic outlook, many Yemenis simply cannot contemplate marriage because of their finances.
Inspired by China and other countries in South Asia where mass wedding have been organized for several years as way to by-pass expensive ceremonies while providing attendees a joyful experience, Yemenis are now embracing the concept.
Today, an expecting crowd, composed of some 250 groom, all dressed up to a T in their sparkling white Galabiyahs waited jubilantly for the Imam to conclude the ceremony to return home to their new bride.
Prime Minister Mohammed Salem Basindwa attended the ceremony with other state officials, all full of praise for such a positive social achievement.
Abdul Salam Salami, President of the Association for Chastity and Righteousness said his organization sought to help young people move forward in life by enabling them to marry.
He added the Association's work went beyond a simple financial hand out and involved pre-marital education as well as medical checks to guarantee of the heath of each groom and bride.
Moreover, the Association will help each family achieve financial stability through employment and training.
