Yemen Signs € 7.6 Million Deal with GTZ

The Ministry of Education and the German Technical Cooperation Foundation GTZ signed a deal Monday for financing a number of educational projects in Yemen.  

Under the agreement, Germany will provide € 7.6 million, out of which € 3.5 million would be used for improving secondary education and the quality of education particularly in mathematics, physics and Chemistry besides the building up of capacity of educational institutions, establishing an integrated educational database and contributing to fostering providing textbooks.

The agreement also calls for training male and female teachers and qualifying the school administrations in the provinces of Hajja and Mareb in an effort to activate their professional role.  

The community participation, giving priority to the girl's education, reducing the gender gap in education and increasing school joining of boys and girls in the two provinces were of the main issues the agreement dealt with.   

The agreement, which was signed by Minister of Education Abdul Salam Al-Jawfi and the GTZ Educational Improving Director, affirms local and foreign educational experts in various areas must be provided to improve the educational programs.  

Earlier this week, Yemen and donors signed a $ 103 million agreement for financing a project aiming to improve secondary education and increasing the girls' enrolment and retention.  

The project would be implemented over six years.
