According to the Chairman of the General Authority for the Book Faris Al-Saqqaf, about one million people visited the 25th Sana'a International Book Fair 2008 that wrapped up last Sunday. Ranking it to be the second-largest book fair in the Arab world, Al-Saqqaf revealed that the fair contained over 350,000 titles covering all fields of knowledge and 400 publishing houses participated in it. It is estimated that the fair yielded over YR 1 billion in direct revenues from sales of books and CDs, despite the fact that the timing was not suitable for most customers especially when it came after the Fitr Eid and at the start of a new academic year. Religious books came in the first place, followed by history, cultural, specialized and academic books when it came to sales. Women showed more interest in books than men and there were organized visits for school and university students. |
